"Relaxing hotel in Phuket"

4.0/5

Thu 23 May 2013 Singapore, Singapore

Spend 4 relaxing days with family in this wonderful hotel. The resort is located on a small Island near Phuket city but they have shuttle bus to go to town. The atmosphere and the service was very good. The Discovery suite was great and big enough for a family with kids. The SPA was great as well. Employees are very kind and helpful. The morning buffet is really good and the EEST restaurant experience was great. The beach side is the minus of this hotel but the swimming pools are nice.

not the best i have stayed in, we upgraded our room and paid an extra $100 per night because the first room was below standards. the resort beach is a joke, you cant really swim in it, and the should not advertise that they have a beach, The two pools are ok, a bit dirty. The spa was great, the scenary and sunset views are superb.

We went back to the Westin for the 2nd time after 2 years and we believe that it is a tremendous improvement! The hotel is still relatively new but they have ironed out the kinks we encountered during our last visit. The resort is now double in size compared to Oct 2010 and we get to try out the newer side of the resort when they upgraded us to a suite courtesy of our SPG Platinum status. The room was wonderful and spacious with a big dining/sitting area. They even did up our bedroom with towel art as they know that this was our 2nd wedding anniversary trip. One of the highlights of our short getaway is the SPG Platinum evening drinks on top of the Prego restaurant. The drinks were great and the view is second to none. Once again, food wise we have no complaints - with a great breakfast spread and a good balance of buffet, local Thai food and an Italian restaurant for variety. The only thing is that this resort is pretty for from the town and the regular beach hotspots on the island. However, it more than make up for it by the service and stunning location. Definitely much improved and ageing gracefully!

"Great Stay, Relax."

Stayed 2 nights in this hotel and it was great. We get early check-in and the view of the hotel is great. The room was great sea view and I can see the Horizon Pool from my room as well. I love the environment so much, quite and not crowed maybe due to the location. Location is great and not a problem for me because i rented a car, it's far away from the city, a place for you to run away and relax. Enjoyed it very much. Having a drink during sunset at the horizon pool. Food was great at Prego By the Beach and Seasonal Taste as well. Staff are very friendly and polite. Thanks Westin for the service and I enjoyed it very much.

"Standards may be slipping"

Thu 09 May 2013 Bangkok, Thailand

I stayed at the Westin a few years ago when everything was nice and relatively new. My stay there last month was still nice but certain things had lost the edge - which were there before. First off and noticeably is the addition of two large tour desks in the lobby, one most certainly centered around the many Chinese guests at the hotel - so much so they had a Chinese (or Chinese speaking) guy staffing the desk. Check-in was uneventful, however one of our rooms was still unavailable, despite a late afternoon check-in. Most of the rooms entail going up a hill (or several), or dozens of steps and whilst golf carts can be requested to and from the rooms - it just wasn't practical every time you wanted to go somewhere - however we knew this before we booked, so is only here as information to others. The rooms are quite spacious with a divine bed which actually cuddles you when you lie on/in it - but without being too soft or saggy. The best bed in any hotel I have ever stayed. There is a sofa and large flat screen TV and the seemingly standard Starwood connection panel on the wall for charging/usb/ HDMi etc. (great). Views from the balcony were also great, but considering the hotel is built on a mountainside overlooking a bay - they should be. Now the bad points: In my opinion, if a room is fitted with certain features and equipment, it should work and be maintained. This time around several things in the room did not work. Not important enough to complain to the staff about but enough to feel the room was poorly maintained. In the bathroom the speaker switch/volume was not working (which allows you to listen to the TV sound whilst in the bathroom). Also the illuminated mirror would not illuminate and had the chrome attachment screws missing, maybe the technician forgot to replace them when he last worked on it? The electric cable for the auto blind at the bathroom window was hanging down, exposing the bare wires and taped over connections. The door stop had been pounded so many times it was just lying on the floor - begging to be re-affixed. In the actual room, one of the night-lights was literally hanging off the wall and the balcony door switches which automatically turn off the air-con when they are open were terribly sensitive and often required several open-and shut cycles before we could get the air-con to operate. Outside on the balcony - the wooden rail was desperate to be re-painted, looking heavily weathered and the walls of the hotel could benefit from a little TLC too - also showing signs of heavy weathering. All these points are minor and did not really detract from the beautiful Westin experience. But people tend to notice the negative points more than the positive and a little care and maintenance could sort out most of these things. It may be that the hotel is catering to the mass tourism market now (Chinese etc) and is letting standards slip slightly. The swimming pools are beautifully designed and located - however I did pick up several pool tiles which were lying dangerously on the bottom of the pool and had obviously become detached. Again maintenance standards appear to be slipping. The private and solitary beach is nice for rest and relaxation - however due to its location in a bay - with a fishing port around the corner - the sea water isn't as good (clean) as the sea in other parts of Phuket. I wouldn't swim in it. Finally, when I stayed here before - once you passed the security gate - you were in an almost different world, In an enclosed complex without stress or worry, and away from the constant touting and jostling of the 'outside world'. Except now - the Management appear to have allowed (some of) the outside world in - and several times times when walking in or past the lobby - I was 'treated to the constant cries of "Taxi Mister" - from some of the local taxi 'mobs' who before were banished to the outside of the hotel grounds, yet now were hanging around the lobby area as if we were in Patong or Bangla Road. I came to stay at the Westin to get away from all that and somebody in their wisdom has decided to allow the outside world into the hotel grounds. If the Westin has had a change of course and is aiming for the mass market instead of marketing it's exclusivity - then they might consider lowering their prices and joining the other middle of the road hotels. Would I stay again? If the current trend continues, probably not - but if it fixes the minor points and gets maintenance back on top - then I might.
