Things to do - Ehime

Dogo-onsen Hot Spring

Dogo-onsen Hot Spring, located in Matsuyama, the capital of Ehime, is the oldest spa in Japan, which is said to have 3,000 year history. The Main Building (Honkan), is the first public bathhouse designated as an important cultural asset in its 100 years anniversary. It is also known as a model of the bathhouse of gods in Hayao Miyazaki’s animated film “Spirited Away”. Located about 100 meters away from the Honkan is Dogo Onsen's secondary bath house, Asuka no Yu. Opened in Sep 2017, it is a tastefully designed, modern version of the Honkan, offering similar visiting plans from simply using the bath (600 yen) to the additional use of private rooms (1650 yen) and a private bath (plus 2000 yen).

Matsuyama Castle

Matsuyama Castle, with its constrcution starting in 1603, was completed in 1627 by Kato Yoshiaki, who had once served under the hegemon Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the ruler of Japan in the latter half of the 16th century. It stands on the summit of Katsu-yama, which is positioned almost in the middle of Matsuyama, and the castle building, stone walls and moat with the donjon at the center retain their former images well. The donjon was originally a five-tiered building but was renovated as a three-tiered structure in the 17th century. This donjon was destroyed in a fire afterwards, and the existing one was built in 1854.

Botchan Ressha

The Botchan Ressha is a diesel-powered replica of a small-gauge steam locomotive installed in the city of Matsuyama, Ehime, Japan in 1888 as the original Iyo Railway. "Not only was it the first railway in Shikoku but it was also the third private railway in Japan." The train was depicted in Natsume Sōseki's 1906 novel, Botchan, looking as dinky as a matchbox. Since resuming service in October 2001, the streetcars are once again running through the city of Matsuyama and are now a popular tourist attraction.

Things to do - Kochi

Kumono Ueno Hotel Bekkan

This large wooden building is designed by Kengo Kuma, famous Japanese architect. The building concept is ‘a forest in Yusuhara's downtown’, on the basis of which Kuma used thatch on the eastern outer wall with inspiration from local traditional roofs. This design brings a unique outlook and enhances ventilation. The building concept is also reflected in a number of cedar pillars arranged on the first floor, where visitors can go around with a feeling of a forest walk. Kumo-no-Ue-no Gallery nearby is a bridge-shaped building linking the hotel and the gallery. The unique outline of the building made it to become the popular check-in landmark in Kochi prefecture.

Things to do - Tokushima

Iya Valley Area

Iya Valley Area is situated in the western part of Tokushima and is a part of the Mt. Tsurugi Quasi-National Park.

Nana Magari (Seven Curves) is known as the most dangerous spot in the valley. The Statue of Peeing Boy stands on the overhanging rock and as the tale goes, it was build there to ward off the young daredevils who would come here to urinate off the rock to show their bravery. It stands at a height of 200 meters from the bottom of the valley and it will make you cringe just by glancing down below.

The vine bridge over the Iya River is called Iya no Kazurabashi (Vine Bridges in the Iya Valley) and this suspension bridge is 45 meters long and 2 meters wide, and is 14 meters above the water. Rebuilt every three years, this bridge is designated as a national important folkloric property and is one of Japan's three rare bridges.

Naruto Strait

Naruto Strait with its violently whirling currents is located between Hyogo and Tokushima. The rise and fall of the tides produced by the gravitational attraction of the moon and the sun create dynamic whirling currents depending on the topography. The current is as fast as 20km per hour at the time of spring and autumn tides. Because the best time to see whirling waves is different depending on the day, it is important to plan your schedule in advance.

The ocean promenade “Uzu-no-michi” is convenient for access to the whirlpool. You can experience the thrilling view through the glass floors of an observatory at 45 meters above the sea. The whirlpool ship “Kanrinmaru” of the Uzushio Cruise also offers views of the whirling waves.
